In 1988, Texas native Edie Brickell (with her band The New Bohemians) recorded the double-platinum album Shooting Rubberbands at the Stars, which included the hit single “What I Am”. She has since recorded several albums as a soloist and in collaboration with other musicians. She is married to legendary singer-songwriter Paul Simon. Grammy winner J.J. Cale wrote the songs “Cocaine”, “After Midnight”, “Travelin’ Light”, “Call Me The Breeze” and many other classics. Austin-based rocker Alejandro Escovedo performs with various ensembles—he sometimes orchestrates his music to include violin, cello, harp and brass. After a nearly fatal battle with Hepatitis C, Escovedo is now performing and recording regularly. He was named Musician of the Year at the 2009 Austin Music Awards, part of the South by Southwest Music Festival.
Austin singer-songwriter David Garza received nationwide acclaim for his 1998 album This Euphoria, which included the hits “Discoball World” and “Slave”.
Folk musician Eliza Gilkyson is an icon of the Austin music scene. Her many albums include Redemption Road, Land of Milk and Honey and Beautiful World. Two of Eliza’s songs were recently recorded by folk legend Joan Baez. Photographed in 2009 at a benefit concert.
The Austin burlesque troupe Kitty Kitty Bang Bang was founded in 2002. Their dance shows incorporate vaudevillian humor and raunchy sexual innuendo.
Ben Mallott fronted the short-lived band The Helpers before going solo in 2008 with the alternative country album Look Good, Feel Good. His sweet sad songs have been well received in Austin, where local critics have identified him as one of a handful of young artists who deserve national attention.
Iggy Pop is considered by many to be the original punk rocker. In the 1960s and ’70s, he fronted the band The Stooges. His hit songs include “Lust for Life” and “Real Wild Child”. This photo was taken in 1997 at the South by Southwest Music Festival in Austin, Texas.
Bob Schneider is a fixture of the Austin music scene. He fronted the band The Scabs before becoming a solo artist.
